Lisbon
History - From the very beginning Lisbon
showed great strength as a city destined for greatest.
There were obstacles and devastating natural disasters
that hit the area, but Lisbon rebuilt, stood strong
and is now standing firm in its resilience.
Since 1260 Lisbon has been the Capital of
Portugal.
In 1290 the University of Lisbon
was founded.
Many people came to the land to call it their home
and over the next number of years and it continued
to prosper. The city of Lisbon had reached its prosperity
during the 16th century when the Portugese
Empire was in rule. It was at this time that
the city was robust.
In the year 1531 on January 26 total
devastation shook the city. An earthquake hit the
area and it killed thousands. It took long for the
city to rebuild itself but it did and it went on to
prosper again.
In the year 1755 on November 1 yet
another earthquake hit the city of Lisbon. This was
a very strong and devastating earthquake and with
its ferocity it caused a monstrous loss of life and
killed 90,000 people in its wake. 85% of the city
was completely destroyed by this earthquake. It took
many years for the city to rebuild itself again.
On Octover 2 – 5, 1910 there was a republican
revolt in Lisbon that lasted a long
time..
Now the City of Lisbon is the wealthiest
in Portugal. This is a city that is mainly service
oriented. It does a tremendous business in tourism
due to the wonderful architecture, scenery and interesting
cutlural exhibits. Many people call Lisbon their home
and many more travel to visit and experience all it
has to offer. You will see why the ones who live their
love their home and why travelers by the millions
come from all over the world to visit its lands over
and over again. It is a beautiful city, the city on
the seven hills, the city of Lisbon.
